Women's Soccer Forfeits Win To Dayton

Oct. 21, 2002

Recap?|? Final Stats

The University of Illinois announces that its women's soccer team has forfeited its September 27 win over Dayton due to the participation of an ineligible player. Illinois originally won the game 2-1, but Dayton will now be credited with the victory.

NCAA rules state that any player receiving a second red card in the same season shall not compete in the next two regularly scheduled games. Fighting Illini midfielder Tara Schuling, who had an assist versus the Flyers, received her second red card versus Michigan State on Sept. 20. Schuling sat out Illinois' Sept. 22 match versus Michigan, the normal penalty for a single red card, but due to an administrative oversight, failed to sit out versus Dayton. The Big Ten determined that the Dayton game would be forfeited and that the red carded player would be suspended from the next regularly scheduled contest. Schuling served that suspension during the Illinois victory over Indiana on Sunday afternoon.

All statistics from the match will still count for both teams, including Schuling's assist. Illinois' record drops to 6-9-0 overall, but remains at 3-5-0 in the Big Ten Conference. Dayton's record improves to 13-2-0.
