Despite outgaining the West by 136 yards, Ron Turner's East squad fell to the West 21-13 in the 77th annual East-West Shrine All-Star Classic today at San Francisco's Pacific Bell Stadium.
Illinois quarterback Kurt Kittner started for the East squad and led the team down the field for the first score of the game. He was 3 of 5 in the first drive and finished the game 7 of 19 for 95 yards. Kittner took snaps from Illini starting center Luke Butkus who helped lead the East to 445 yards of total offense.
Two Illini defenders, tackle Brandon Moore and safety Bobby Jackson, started for Mike Cassity on the other side of the ball. The East defense held the West to only 81 yards rushing and 228 passing. The squad also recorded 4 sacks in a game where the defenses weren't allowed to blitz.
Kittner is slated to play in the Senior Bowl on Jan. 26 in Mobile, Ala., and Butkus has accepted an invitation to play in the Hula Bowl in Maui on Feb. 2.
