AUBURN, Ala. -- In the second meet of the season, the Fighting Illini women's gymnastics team turned in outstanding performances to take second place at the Auburn quadrangular meet. The host Tigers won the event with a score of 192.652 followed by the Illini with 191.575. Illinois-Chicago came in third (190.350) and Centenary College finished fourth (186.950). Illinois is now 2-2 this season.
Illinois turned in the top team scores of the meet on both the balance beam and floor exercise. Junior Jana Gallagher was the individual champion on the beam with a score of 9.850. Junior Karen Hawley tied for second (9.750) and freshman Margaret Dann tied for fourth (9.725) to lead Illinois to a total of 48.125, nearly a full point higher than any of the other three teams. Gallagher also scored a 9.775 to tie for first on the floor exercise. Freshman Ashley Williams tied for fourth with a 9.725 en route to the Illini turning in a meet best 48.150 in the event.
In her return to her home state of Alabama, Williams continued to impress in only her second collegiate meet. Last week's Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, Williams tied for second on the vault (9.775), took second on the bars (9.700), tied for fourth on floor (9.725) and tied for 14th on the beam (9.200) to finish second in the all-around with a total score of 38.500.
The Illini open their home schedule at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Huff Hall.In the co-ed event the women host Illinois State and the men face Nebraska.
