Edmonton, Alberta -
Illinois track and field standouts Susanna Kallur and Perdita Felicien qualified for the semifinals of the women's 100 meter hurdles at the 2001 World Track and Field Championships, Thursday evening in Edmonton, Alberta.
The preliminary round races consisted of four heats, with the top-three finishers in each heat earning automatic qualifying bids into Friday's semifinals. The top four non-winning times also earned bids into the next round.
Kallur, a sophomore-to-be on the Illinois track and field team and member of the Swedish national team, ran a personal-best time of 12.74 to win her heat of the event. That time is the 11th-fastest in the world this year and second all-time in the 100 meter hurdles at Illinois. Kallur's time was just shy of Felicien's 12.73 ran during the 2001 outdoor track and field season.
Felicien, who is competing for her home country of Canada, finished second in her heat with a time of 12.89. The junior-to-be, finished just behind American Jenny Adams, who ran the race in 12.80.
Kallur and Felicien will return to the track on Friday to run in the semifinal rounds of the 100 meter hurdles. The race is scheduled to start at 9:35 p.m. CST, with Felicien running in lane No. 5 of the first heat. Kallur will run in heat No. 2, but lane assignments have yet to be assigned for that heat.
