University of Illinois head football coach Ron
Turner welcomed a class of 31 rookies to campus Sunday afternoon. The
newcomers will begin two-a-day practices Monday morning. He also
welcomed back former Director of Football Operations, Doug Green, to
fill the open position on an interim basis.
Highlighting the 2001 recruiting class were 18 scholarship players
and 13 walk-ons. The newcomers and their parents went through an
orientation, which included the taking of photos, physicals,
equipment fitting and meetings with the coaches and athletic
department staff. The players will undergo two days of practice at
Memorial Stadium on Aug. 6-7 before the veterans report on Wednesday,
Aug. 8. Practice times are scheduled for 9:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. on
Monday and Tuesday.
Green worked with operations at Illinois from 1997-99 before leaving
to finish law school. He also served as the media relations director
for the Washington Redskins during the 2000 season. Green will
supervise all aspects of operations, including preseason camp,
recruiting, travel and facility management.
