The University of Illinois' two-a-day practices on Tuesday seemed like night and day ... literally. During the squad's morning session, the Illini put on the full pads for two hours of hard-hitting action in sunny, mid-80 degree heat. The second workout was moved to a 7 p.m. start under the lights at Memorial Stadium, where over 150 fans watched the Illini in cool 70-degree temperatures.
"Today's practice was good," head coach Ron Turner said of the morning's workouts. "We had great energy. The enthusiasm and intensity were there and the execution was the best it has been."
SCOUTING THE LINEBACKERS: There is only one word to describe the 2001 linebacking unit ... Youth. With only junior Jerry Schumacher returning from last year's two-deep, the spring practices and preseason training camp has been full of competition for the two remaining starting roles. Through eight practices many players are emerging as potential playmakers at the linebacker position.
