URBANA, Ill.-- The opening round of the annual Illini Spring Classic was played today at the 72-par, 5,842-yard Stone Creek Golf Club. Illinois finished the day in second place with a team total of 313. Notre Dame leads the 16-team field with a 306. Ohio University is one stroke behind the Illini. The Bobcats are in third with a score of 314 followed by Grand Valley State in fourth (319) and Illinois State (323).
Freshman Marla Cox continued to lead the Illini. She shot 76 strokes in the opening round. She finished the day tied for fifth place. Sophomore Mari Walters, who is competing as an individual, is also tied for fifth with 76 strokes. Renata Young, Carmel Sielicki and Stephanie Cheney, who is also competing individually, are all tied for 12th place with scores of 78. Laurin Kanda and Michelle Carroll each shot 81 strokes today. They are tied for 23rd. Competing as individuals, Kate Peters shot 90 strokes (T74th) and Carol Mayer recorded a 101 (83rd).
Notre Dame's Shane Smith and Shannon Byrne each recorded scores of 74 to tie for first place after the opening round.
The second and final round of the Illini Spring Classic tee's off at Stone Creek with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
