The University of Illinois football used spring practice No. 7 to get an 80 plays of scrimmage work during Saturday afternoon's session on the East Practice Fields.
Senior quarterback Kurt Kittner performed like a seasoned veteran, hitting 10-of18 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns. In the first drive of the afternoon, Kittner found sophomore receiver Brandon Lloyd for a 75-yard touchdown on third down. Sophomore quarterback Dustin Ward followed up with a 57-yard touchdown pass to junior Greg Lewis. On the afternoon, Ward passed for 116 yards on 6-of-11 passing. Kittner also connected with sophomore Rantoul-native Dwayne Smith for a 52-yard touchdown and junior Aaron Moorehead for a 14-yard TD.
Junior running back Antoineo Harris led the team in rushing with 39 yards on nine carries, while senior Rocky Harvey broke loose for an 18-yard scramble in his 26-yard performance. Smith led the team in receiving with 97 yards on three catches, followed b y Lloyd with 75 yards on one reception.
The defense showed multiple fronts and put a lot of pressure on the Illinois quarterbacks. Junior cornerback Eugene Wilson and redshirt-freshman linebacker Lee Sicinski came up with interceptions for the Illini defense. The defensive back brother duo of Marc and Bobby Jackson led the team in total tackles with five each. Cornerback newcomer Jamaal Clark came up with four tackles as well as junior linebacker Jerry Schumacher, who has moved to mike linebacker this spring.
"We saw some very good things from both the offense and the defense, which is what you want from a first scrimmage," head football coach Ron Turner said. "It is too soon to put a grade on the performance, but there are plenty of things we still need to work on."
