Illini In Seventh After Opening Round

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Illinois women's golf team opened the San Antonio Shootout with a 310 on the 72-par, 5,925-yard Pecan Valley course. The Illini are in seventh place in the 11-team event. Wisconsin leads the field with a 302.

Freshman Marla Cox, who has finished in the top 10 in both of the previous spring tournaments, continued to lead the Illinois squad. She is currently tied for seventh place with a first round score of 75. Laurin Kanda and Stephanie Cheney are close to the top 20. Both are tied for 21st-place with opening rounds of 78. Michelle Carroll is one stroke behind. With a 79, Carroll is tied for 26th. Renata Young shot 84 strokes. She is tied for 51st.

The Illini hope to move closer to the top when they compete in the final round of the tournament on Tuesday.
