TAMPA,Fla.-- The Illinois women's golf team dropped ten strokes to take fourth place at the 15th annual Snowbird Intercollegiate. The Illini shot a final round of 314 at the 72-par, 5,940-yard Pebblecreek Country Club. Illinois finished with a two-round total of 638, just three strokes shy of third-place Idaho. Arkansas State won the tournament with a 623.
Sophomore Laurin Kanda led the Illini after the opening round, however, she was forced to withdraw today because of illness. That meant that Illinois only had four golfers competing toward the team total, so every score counted.
Freshman Marla Cox stepped up to lead the Illinois squad. She shot a 78 in the final round to bring her tournament total to 156. She finished ninth on the leaderboard. Freshman Michelle Carroll also had a strong showing. After starting the tournament with an 87 on Thursday, Carroll dropped 13 strokes to shoot a 74. She tied for 20th place with a total of 161 strokes.
After an 87 in the opening round, sophomore Renata Young dropped to a 78. She tied for 39th with a total of 165. Carmel Sielicki shot a two-round total of 166 to tie for 46th. Teammate Mari Walters, who was competing as an individual, also tied for 46th with a 166. After withdrawing from the competition because of an injury on Thursday, Stephanie Cheney competed as an individual today shooting an 87.
The next tournament for Illinois will be the San Antonio Showdown March 26-27.
