CHAMPAIGN, Ill. --- The University of Illinois women's gymnastics team lost a close battle with Ohio State at Huff Hall tonight. Despite a near record-setting score, the Buckeyes defeated the Illini 195.850-195.700. Illinois fell just 0.10 short of the school record (195.800), which was set against Ohio State in 1999. The Illini fall to 0-4 on the year.
Head Coach Bob Starkell was pleased with the team spirit his gymnasts displayed throughout the competition. "They performed excellent," Starkell said. "As a team, they were together. They were motivated to do well, and they are coming off one of their hardest weeks of training."
Sophomore Jana Gallagher tied for first on the balance beam with Ohio State's Jenni Lymanstall. Gallagher tied her career-high of 9.925 to earn the individual recognition. Senior Lisa Pellegrinetti also set a career mark en route to tying for individual honors. She scored a 9.900 to tie for first on the floor exercise. Sophomore Karen Hawley set a career-high of 39.225 to place second in the all-around.
Several other gymnasts set career highs during the meet. Along with tying her career-best on the balance beam, Gallagher set a career mark of 9.650 on the vault. Pellegrinetti also recorded a second career-best performance with a score of 9.825 on the beam. Hawley scored a career-best of 9.825 on the beam. Junior Michelle Mesik set career marks on both the floor (9.825) and the beam (9.675). Senior Carissa Ericson had the best vault of her career scoring a 9.750. Senior Jennifer Barrett scored a career-best of 9.675 on the uneven bars, and junior Mina Moradi vaulted to a new career high of 9.625.
The Illini go on the road to face Kentucky Feb. 10. Illinois women's gymnastics returns to Huff Hall for a co-ed match-up with Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb 16.
