LAKESIDE, Calif.-- Freshman Marla Cox led the way as the Illini are in fifth place after the first day of competition in the 16-team Lady Aztec Invitational. Cox is tied for fifth place after shooting a 77 in the first round of the spring season. Sophomore Laurin Kanda is tied for 12th after shooting 79 strokes on the 72-par, 6,140-yard Barona Creek course.
Sophomore Carmel Sielicki shot an 82 in the opening round. She and teammate Michelle Carroll, who is competing as an individual, are tied for 34th. Renata Young shot an 84 in the first round of the season. She is tied for 48th. Stephanie Cheney is tied for 60th place with an 18-hole total of 86 strokes.
The Illini will try to move up in the standings when they play the final 18 holes of the 36-hole tournament on Tuesday.
