Illinois Takes Seventh Place at Shootout at The Legends

Franklin, Ind. - The Illinois women's golf team improved from tenth to seventh place during the final round of play today at the Shootout at The Legends in Franklin, Ind. The Illini finished 7th out of 19 teams at the par-72, 6,076-yard course at The Legends.

The Illini shot a final round score of 300 today to finish the 54-hole tournament 43-over par with a score of 907. Michigan won the tournament with a score of 877, 13-over par and 30 strokes ahead of the Illini. Wisconsin was runner-up with 879 and Kent State took third carding 885. Other Big Ten teams included Indiana (4th, 898), Purdue (6th, 906), Minnesota (9th, 912), Iowa (10th, 914), and Penn State (11th, 921).

Individually, two golfers tied for medalist honors as Michigan's Kim Benedict and Kent State's Martina Gillen both finished four-under par with a 212.

Junior Laurin Kanda led the Illini, finishing tied for 18th individually at nine-over par, shooting a three-round score of 225 (74-78-73). Two Illinois golfers tied for 24th place, as junior Renata Young and sophomore Michelle Carroll each carded 227, 11-over par. Young fired rounds of 75-75-77, while Carroll shot 75-78-74.

Rounding out the action for the Illini was junior Stephanie Cheney, who tied for 30th place individually with a 228 (75-77-76), and sophomore Marla Cox in 81st place with a 54-hole score of 240 (81-80-79).

The Illini women's golf team now has a break in action until Nov. 5-6 when they travel to Pinehurst, N.C. for the Pine Needles Women's Collegiate Invitational.
