MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Illini opened the 2000 Lady Northern today at the 72-par, 5,979-yard Les Bolstad University of Minnesota Golf Course. Illinois shot a 323 in the opening round of the 16-team tournament. The Illini are in 10th place after the first day of competition. Conference foe Purdue led the field with an opening round of 309.

Sophomore Laurin Kanda led the Illini with a 79 in the opening round. She is tied for 19th place. Newcomer Marla Cox and sophomore Renata Young both shot 81 strokes today to tie for 35th place. Sophomore Stephanie Cheney is tied for 47th with a first-round total of 82. Sophomore transfer student Carmel Sielicki shot an 84 in the opening round to tie for 67th. Ireland-native Michelle Carroll shot an 86 today in just her second round at the collegiate level to tie for 82nd.

The Illini will continue to play in the annual Lady Northern on Saturday and Sunday.
