Kanda ties for 12th in shortened tournament
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Sophomore Laurin Kanda led the Illini to a seventh place finish at the Mary Fossum Spartan Invitational. Kanda finished with a 3-over par 75 to tie with six other golfers for 12th place. The tournament was shortened to one round, played this morning, because of flooded greens at the 72-par, 5,908-yard Forest Akers West golf course.
The Illini finished seventh with a team total of 306. They edged Indiana by three strokes while falling short of Minnesota's winning score of 296.
Three Illini tied for 22nd place. Newcomer Marla Cox and sophomores Stephanie Cheney and Carmel Sielicki, who transferred from Washington State University, all shot 77 strokes in today?s single round. Sophomore Renata Young tied for 70th with an 83. Freshman Michelle Carroll competed as an individual. In her first collegiate tournament she shot an 86 to tie for 83rd place.
Next weekend the Fighting Illini women's golf team travels to Minneapolis, Minn. for the Lady Northern.
