EL CAJON, Calif. - The University of Illinois women's golf team began action today in the Lady Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University. Freshman Laurin Kanda shot a 1-over par 73 in the opening round of competition at the 6,600 yard, 72 par Singing Hills Golf Course in El Cajon, Calif. Kanda is tied for fourth heading into the final round.

Overall, the Illini are in 12th place with a total of 316. While Kanda continued to pace the Illini, her freshman teammates are not far behind her. Stephanie Cheney is six strokes behind Kanda. Cheney is tied for 45th after shooting a first round 79. Freshman Renata Young and senior Nell Macke both shot rounds of 82. They are tied for 67th. Senior Lorette Lyttle is also participating in the tournament. She shot a first-round 86 to tie for 92nd.

The Illini will play in the final round of the Lady Aztec Invitational on Tuesday.
