March 25, 2000

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Illinois men's track & field team opened up their 2000 outdoor season today, competing at the SIU Quadrangular. Indiana State won the meet with 191 team points, followed by Illinois State with 165 points. Illinois placed fourth with 138 points.

Junior Sherman Armstrong won the 400m Intermediate Hurdles with an NCAA provisionally qualifying time of 50.76 seconds. Armstrong is coming off of an indoor season that saw him earn All-American honors in the 400m dash earlier this month at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Illini pole valuators were impressive, capturing the top four places. Leading the way were senior Justin Norberg and freshman Garrett Nelson, who placed first and second, respectively.

Sophomore Charles Burton won the triple jump, leaping 49 feet 4 1/4 inches, just four inches off of his outdoor personal best.
