CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Illinois men's track & field team opened up their
2000 outdoor season today, competing at the SIU Quadrangular. Indiana
State won the meet with 191 team points, followed by Illinois State with
165 points. Illinois placed fourth with 138 points.
Junior Sherman Armstrong won the 400m Intermediate Hurdles with
an NCAA provisionally qualifying time of 50.76 seconds. Armstrong is
coming off of an indoor season that saw him earn All-American honors in
the 400m dash earlier this month at the NCAA Indoor Championships in
Fayetteville, Ark.
Senior Tyrone Jones and sophomore Kendall McCroy placed first
and second in the 400m dash, respectively. Jones ran a time of 47.69.
The Illini pole valuators were impressive, capturing the top
four places. Leading the way were senior Justin Norberg and freshman
Garrett Nelson, who placed first and second, respectively.
Sophomore Charles Burton won the triple jump, leaping 49 feet 4
1/4 inches, just four inches off of his outdoor personal best.
The Illini also won the 4x400m relay, posting a time 3:12.82.
