SEBRING, Fla. - The University of Illinois women's golf team finished fifth in the field of 18 with a two-round total of 626 for its highest placing of the season and freshman standout Laurin Kanda posted a third -place finish in the individual competition, Saturday in the final round of the Springlake Intercollegiate at the 72-par, 5,966 yard Springlake Golf and Country Club in Sebring, Florida.
After shooting a season-low 306 as a team on Friday, the Illini followed up with a 320 for the second lowest this spring and the fifth-best score in school history. Kanda, who shot a second round 76, totaled 148 strokes for the tournament which is the fourth-highest 36-hole score in the Illinois record books and the highest two-round score since 1994. Fellow freshman Stephanie Cheney turned in a 15th-place finish with a two-round total of 156.
"This performance really bettered our average and we are looking forward to improving on those scores at our next competition," Illinois head coach Paula Smith said. "The tournmant was a great start to our spring break trip. "
Freshman Renata Young placed 27th with a 159, while senior Nell Macke, who was competing as an individual placed 33rd with a two-round 161. Lorette Lyttle shot a 163 for 44th, Mari Walters scored 165 for 51st and Christine Scott placed 57th with a 166.
The Illini will return to action on Thursday for the Snowbird Invitational a two-day tournament in Tampa, Florida.
