CHAMPAIGN, Ill - The Fighting Illini women's golf team began their 2000 campaign today at the Midwest Classic in Dallas, Texas. Northwestern University is hosting the event at the 5,838-yard, par 72 Hyatt Bear Creek (West) Golf Course.

Illinois struggled in the first day of competition finishing 16th with a round of 339. They were hindered by a rain delay that lasted the majority of the morning.

Freshman Laurin Kanda (Chico, Calif.) was the Illini leader today shooting an 81. She is tied for 28th entering tomorrow's second round. Freshman

Renata Young (Rogers, Ark) is just one stroke behind Kanda at 82. She is currently tied for 42nd.

Midwest Classic action will resume tomorrow morning and continue through Sunday.
