The Illinois Fighting Illini lost the last match of the season to the Indiana Hoosiers in front of 1,260 fans at Huff Hall on Saturday night, 7-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-11, and 9-15. The Illini end the season at 13-18 overall and 4-16 in the Big Ten while Indiana improved their record to 16-14 and 7-13 in the conference.
Saturday night's match was the last appearance for Illini seniors Betsy Spicer and Heather Wilson. Spicer finished her career on a high note, setting a new career-high wotj 29 kills. She also contributed eight digs and hit .500 for the match. Spicer finishes her Illinois career ranked sixth all-time in career kills (1,245) and fifth all-time in career attack percentage at .345.
Spicer was not the only member of the Illini team who set a career-high. Outside hitter Anne Koester broke her previous best of 22 kills by obtaining 25 against the Hoosiers. Junior Shadia Haddad had a career-best 26 digs and Kate Hill also set a career-high with 14 digs.
"The ball control has been our nemesis all season, and we saw it tonight," said Head Coach Don Hardin. "But I'm proud of the way this group has fought this season through all of the adversity and injuries. Now we've got to work hard to make sure that we turn things around next year."
