Four Illinois players competed in the 64-contestant singles qualifer at Ann Arbor, Mich., today, but none remain in the running for any of the eight spots in the upcoming main draw of the ITA Regional Tournament. Sophomore Erin Miller defeated Detroit Mercy's Vicki Parker but lost in the Round of 32 to fifth-seeded Szandra Fuzesi of Michigan, and senior Simone Kung, the No. 4 seed, beat Jennifer Hsia of Indiana before falling to another Big Ten player, Pascale Veraverbeke of Iowa. In other first-round action, UI freshman Tiffany Eklov, the No. 6 seed, was upset by Eva Herrera of Marquette, and junior Michelle Webb lost a very close match to Bowling Green's Abby Bratton.
The Fighting Illini will still be represented in the main draw, which starts Saturday morning. Senior Carla Rosenberg, sophomore Eldina Fazlic and freshman Jennifer McGaffigan all earned berths because of their strong play earlier this fall.
Eklov will take on Mariana Quintanilla of Western Michigan in the consolation bracket on Friday, Webb's consolation opponent tomorrow will be Lisa Walgenbach of Purdue.
Play in the 32-duo doubles qualifying bracket will also take place Friday. Eklov and Kung will team up against Ruth Barnes and Stacy Kokx of Northwestern, and McGaffigan and Rosenberg will face Indiana's Martina Grimm and Irina Kharun.
