Unseeded Carla Rosenberg will represent Illinois in the singles final of the Midwest Blast women's tennis tournament at the UI Atkins Tennis Center tomorrow morning. The senior from South Africa via Dallas, Texas, earned her spot in the championship match opposite Clemson's Anna Savitskaya, by defeating a pair of Texas A&M players, fourth-seeded Marjorie Terburgh , 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, and sixth-seeded Ashley Hedberg, 6-2, 6-0.
Rosenberg's quarterfinal win was particularly gratifying for a couple of reasons, according to UI Head Coach Sujay Lama. "I feel great for Carla, being unseeded and making it all the way to the finals. Marjorie Terburgh was the No. 3 junior college singles player in the nation last year, and the top doubles player. And for her to come back like she did was tremendous. Carla played very smart, and this was the most aggressive I have seen her play."
"Late in the match I made it a point to go to the net, and it was very effective," said Rosenberg, whose family was in attendance at Atkins.
On the other side of the main draw, UI freshman Jennifer McGaffigan, the No. 3 seed, fell, 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinal to Savitskaya, the tournament's top seed. Lama felt she played well, but was a little fatigued.
"Unfortunately Jenny had to play her teammate, Tiffany Eklov earlier this morning. Those two put on quite a show, they played great tennis. But when you play Tiffany, you're going to have to do a lot of running. So Jenny didn't have a lot left for the semifinal match."
Illinois did not fare so well in this afternoon's doubles competition. Rosenberg and Eklov fell to the top seed, Hedburg and Terburgh, 8-3 in one semifinal, while in the other, McGaffigan and senior Simone Kung, the fourth-seeded doubles team, fell short against Texas A&M's Leah Killen and Ashley Backus, 9-7.
