Alcia Earns First International Cap

Nov. 1, 2006

SEOUL, South Korea - Former Illinois goalkeeper Leisha Alcia (Mississauga, Ontario) earned her first action with the Canadian Women's National Team earlier today in Canada's 4-2 win over Brazil in the Peace Queen Cup. The Peace Queen Cup is an eight-team international tournament featuring five teams that either have qualified or are expected to reach the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Alcia made her international debut in the 77th minute against the Brazilians, replacing starting keeper Erin McLeod. Alcia has been with the Canadians since being named to the team in late August.

"Everyone here at Illinois is excited to see Leisha realize a goal she has had for a long time," Illinois coach Janet Rayfield said. "Throughout her career as a player and a coach, Leisha has continued to train and prepare herself for this opportunity. We all hope this is the first of many caps to come."

With the win, Canada reached the Peace Queen Cup championship on Saturday in Seoul, South Korea. They will face the winner of Group B, either the United States, Denmark or Australia. In addition, the Canadians will be part of the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup tournament on November 22 and 26 in preparation for the 2007 World Cup in China. Alcia is currently an assistant coach at Western Kentucky when she is not playing with Canada.
