Illinois wrestling coach Jim Heffernan has added Illinois great Isaiah Martinez as a volunteer assistant coach.

Martinez's career with the Illini came to a close after the 2018 season, which ended with a second-place finish at NCAA Championships. Martinez finished his career as a two-time NCAA Champion (2015, 2016), and a four-time Big Ten Champion (2015-2018). He is one of just 16 wrestlers in Big Ten history to win four individual conference titles. Martinez ended his collegiate career with a 116-3 record, good for a .975 win percentage that is the highest in school history. He won 54-consecutive matches from November 9, 2014-January 23, 2016. His 116 wins rank 10th on the all-time Illinois wins list. Martinez is a two-time winner of the Illinois Dike Eddleman Male Athlete of the Year award, receiving the honor in 2016 and 2017.

Martinez will serve as a volunteer assistant while also training with the Illinois Regional Training Center (IRTC) for the 2020 Olympics.
