Matthew Phillip enters his first season as the graduate assistant diving coach with the Illini, while looking to earn his master's degree in Kinesiology. The Frisco, Texas, native dove for the men's swimming and diving team at LSU from 2015-19.
While at LSU, Phillip garned a number of indiivdual accolades. Phillip qualified for the NCAA Championships for three consecutive years (2017-19), in addition to being named to the 2016 All-SEC Freshman Team and to the 2017 SEC Academic Honor Roll. During his first ever NCAA Championships appearance in 2017, Phillip finish 34th in the country in 3-meter competition and 23rd in the country on the platform dive.
Along with his diving career at LSU, Phillip earned is undergraduate degree in Kinesiology. Phillip has two siblings, Ryan and Megan, and attended Liberty High School.
