• Athletic career was most influenced by his father, Koichi, because his father encouraged Toshiki's dreams of playing professional tennis
• Idolized former Illini Mike Calkins because he was an excellent player at Illinois and formerly coached Toshiki
• Chose Illinois becaue he liked everything about it and felt it was the best fit
