Joe Maggio is in his fifth season as Illinois' Director of Video in 2025. Maggio oversees all day-to-day video operations for the Fighting Illini, coordinates Illinois and opponent scouting video for coach and student-athlete review, handles recruiting film, and manages a team of student assistants.
Maggio has helped elevate Illinois to new expectations since head coach Bret Bielema's arrival in 2021. The Illini have 28 wins and 18 Big Ten victories since 2021, highlighted by a 10-win season in 2024 that tied Illinois' single-season record for wins. In 2024, Illinois was ranked by the CFP selection committee for a program-record four straight weeks, appeared in 12 AP Top 25 polls, and tied the program record for ranked wins with four. The Fighting Illini capped one of the best seasons in program history by beating #14 South Carolina in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, 21-17, in one of the top bowl game victories in Illinois history.
Maggio joined the Illini after five seasons with the UNLV football program, where he oversaw the Rebels’ video operations. He spent the 2013-15 seasons in the same capacity at Florida International where he worked with former Illinois head coach Ron Turner.
Maggio joined FIU after a long stint at his alma mater, Stony Brook, where he eventually served as video operations manager and pro liaison assistant for the Seawolves. Maggio, who received his bachelor’s in business management economics from Stony Brook in 2012, also worked with the Stony Brook lacrosse program and served as a videographer for the Major League Lacrosse Long Island Lizards franchise.
