Sports Medicine - Kenny Gym EAP

Emergency Action Plan: H.E. Kenney Gymnasium

Address: 1402 West Springfield Avenue, Urbana

Venue Directions: H.E. Kenney Gymnasium is located on West Springfield Avenue between South Matthews Avenue and South Wright Street. Access to building is from parking lot off of South Wright Street. The gymnastics facility is located on the 2nd floor – NO elevator access.

Emergency Personnel: 

Certified athletic trainer(s) are on site for practice; additional sports medicine staff accessible from Memorial Stadium athletic training room (217-333-6718)

Emergency Communication:

Fixed telephone lines located in gym office (217-333-2795) and athletic training room (217-244-6848).

**Cell phones or gym office are preferred.

Emergency Equipment

  • Supplies (splint kit, spine board) located on top of and behind the taping cabinet in the gym.
  • AED located on the east wall of the gymnasium, north of the stairwell

Roles of First Responders

  1. Immediate care of the injured or ill student-athlete.
  2. Activation of emergency medical system (EMS):
    • CALL 9-1-1
      • Provide name, address, telephone number
      • Number of individuals injured
      • Condition of injured
      • First aid treatment
      • Specific directions for access to venue
      • Other information as requested
      • Be the last to hang-up
  3. Emergency equipment retrieval
  4. Direct EMS to scene
  5. Designate an individual to "flag down" EMS and direct to scene:
    • One person will be at the NORTH side entrance

*Must have key card or prop door open due to exterior doors being locked at all times.

  1. Scene control: limit scene to first aid providers and move bystanders away from area.
  2. All transported student-athletes will be directed to Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department located at 611 West Park Street, Urbana, IL; 217-383-3313.
  3. A staff member (athletic trainer or assistant coach) will accompany student-athlete to the hospital in the ambulance.
