Hi Illini Fans!
This past weekend our team competed at the Big Ten Championships at The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis, Indiana. We had a fast turnaround after the Ohio State tournament the weekend before, but the team was ready to get back in action. In the weeks leading up to these two tournaments, we put in a lot of work knowing what to expect out of the two golf courses. We had our cardio workouts in preparation for the hills, as well as practiced playing smart golf. As you may already know, we unfortunately did not qualify for Regionals this year, but it made everyone more determined to try even harder next year.
We had many highlights from the weekend; different people stood out on each day which showed the depth of our team. On the first day, Jan posted a round of 72, even par. On day two, Grace came back strong and posted a round of 71 in tough conditions and it was one of the lowest rounds that day. Even though the weather was not the best, our team pushed through and did not complain. On the last day, Jan shot 71, finishing tied for 16th individually. I am very proud of what the freshman were capable of during their debut at the Big Ten Championships and I am very excited to see what they will accomplish in the years to come.
Even though we did not perform as well as we wanted to, we had such a great weekend with the team, as well as everyone who has come out and show their support. I would have to say that the best part of my weekend was the amount of support that my team and I received. I was filled with joy when I saw family and friends who cheered on us the whole way through. They reminded me of how grateful I am to be a part of this community. Susan Kling, the president of our booster club, also organized a booster tent/tailgate for right after our first round, we were all very well fed! It was a great way to energize us after the round and it definitely put a smile on our faces when great friends are involved! Since it was my last Big Ten Tournament, I was cherishing every moment I had with the team and it made me realize what playing golf at this great institution means to me. My team and I are very appreciative of all the support we received this weekend even from those who sent us encouraging notes and were following us on GolfStat.
Since I am graduating in a couple of weeks, this will be my final Chip Shots. I am thankful for everything I've learned from the coaches and my teammates and for everyone I've met over the past four years. Thank you to all the Illinois support staff and all those who support our program. I am excited to become a fan of this team myself and to see these girls accomplish their goals!
Go Illini!
