Dugouts and Seating Area to Receive Upgrades at Illinois Field
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A gift of $5 million by an anonymous donor is paving the way for a 1,500+-seat renovation at Illinois Field. The renovation is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2027.
Illinois Field's renovation plans feature new and additional seating down the first and third baselines, permanent seatbacks, and new and expanded dugouts. The updated dugouts will include technology upgrades, storage space, and bathrooms.

"We have tremendous gratitude for the donor who has supported the renovation of Illinois Field," said Illinois Director of Athletics Josh Whitman. "Their generosity will have a lasting impact on the Illinois baseball program. We have made meaningful strides in our facilities directly related to student-athlete development, and now we are thrilled to continue the improvement for our fan experience."
"I am extremely excited about the upgrades to Illinois Field," said head coach Dan Hartleb. "The renovations will significantly improve the fan and player experiences while also enhancing home crowd comfort. We have been extremely blessed to have a donor step up to help us to continue to advance Illinois baseball."
Illinois has made major changes to the baseball facility centered on student-athlete development since the stadium's original unveiling in 1988. Updates have included an artificial turf field, lights, video board, and renovated player clubhouse. The state-of-the art Atkins Baseball Training Center opened next to Illinois Field ahead of the 2023 season and the Fighting Illini followed with a Big Ten championship in 2024.
After Illinois Field opened in 1988, the locker room and clubhouse space was renovated and expanded in 1996, while lights were added in 1999. Illinois became one of the first four Big Ten schools with the ability to play night games on its home field.
Just under a decade later, the playing surface was replaced via the installation of artificial FieldTurf prior to the 2008 campaign. A new video scoreboard was built in 2015 before the turf was redone in 2020. The Atkins Baseball Training Center broke ground in 2021 before it was officially opened prior to the 2023 season.
