IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Fighting Illini secured a 6-2 road victory over Iowa in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.
Aidan Flinn earned the first win of his collegiate career, while Michael Farina and Collin Jennings both hit home runs to fuel the Illinois offense.
Flinn went seven innings – his longest outing of the year – while allowing only one hit and striking out five. He posted four 1-2-3 frames, while he retired 11 consecutive batters between the third and sixth innings.Â
Sam Mommer recorded the save, the first of his career, going two innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
At the plate, Jennings went 2-for-5 with four RBI, including a three-run homer that opened the scoring in the second inning. Farina's fourth home run of the season came on a solo shot in the third.
AJ Putty went 3-for-5 and scored twice, while Kyle Schupmann tallied a 2-for-4 day while also reaching on a walk. Nick Groves and J.R. Nelson both reached twice on two walks apiece.
The Illini accounted for the game's first four runs via home runs from Farina and Jennings before the Hawkeyes cut into the deficit with a run in the third. After four straight innings of scoreless play, Iowa plated another in the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, the Orange and Blue answered with two runs to add to their advantage. After scoring on a balk, the Illini scored their sixth run of the day on Jennings' two-out RBI single.
Mommer closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth to give the Illini their 10th conference triumph of the season.
