CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Former Illini running back Rocky Harvey will serve as the Fighting Illini's honorary captain for Saturday's game against Purdue at Gies Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network.
Harvey ranks among Illinois' all-time greats with 2,711 career rushing yards, the sixth-most in Illinois history, and helped bring the Illini national prominence. He was a key part in Illinois' resurgence that capped his senior year in 2001 with a Big Ten title.
Harvey started 29 games for the Fighting Illini from 1998-2001 and carried the ball 545 times, the eighth-most in Illinois history. He had eight career 100-yard games, including rushing for 122 yards and two touchdowns in the Illini's 63-21 victory over Virginia in the 1999 MicronPC.com Bowl.
Harvey's most famous moment came in Ann Arbor on a dive into the endzone that gave the Fighting Illini a 28-27 lead late in the fourth quarter of Illinois' thrilling 35-29 comeback win against the Tom Brady led Michigan Wolverines in 1999. On 3rd-and-4 from their own 41, Kittner found Harvey on a short route over the middle, Harvey cut right and broke free for 59 yards and a dive into the end zone. Harvey finished the famous victory with 108 rushing yards, 61 receiving yards, and two touchdowns.
