Illinois Softball Shocks #21 Ohio State during Doubleheader

URBANA, Ill. – A series opening win over #21 Ohio State highlighted a Senior Weekend twinbill at Eichelberger Field for Illinois softball.

The Fighting Illini own a 22-27 overall record and a 6-14 conference mark. The ranked Buckeyes moved to 42-11-1 this season and 15-6 in Big Ten play.

GAME ONE

Illinois stunned #21 Ohio State, 9-5, at Eichelberger Field to start the doubleheader on Friday.

Megan Nuechterlein earned the win for Illinois as the right-hander went the distance, surrendering five runs on nine hits, allowing six walks and fanning two.

The Fighting Illini out-hit the Buckeyes at a 12-9 clip and the team went 5-for-14 (.357) with runners in scoring position. Paige Berkmeyer led the charge, going 4-for-4 with her second grand slam of the season. Delaney Mosley put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Stevie Meade also chipped in for Illinois, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

The Fighting Illini got on the scoreboard first, with Meade's run-scoring single highlighting a two-run inning for Illinois.

The Buckeyes rallied to score four runs and take a 4-2 lead before the Fighting Illini scored in the fourth with a grand slam from Berkmeyer tallying the runs..

Ohio State narrowed Illinois' lead to 6-5 before the Fighting Illini stretched the advantage to 7-5 in the fifth inning.

Illinois held the Buckeyes scoreless before the offense got things moving the following frame. Mosley's two-run homer, brought the score to 9-5 in favor of the Orange and Blue. Nuecterlein took down the ranked Buckeyes in the top of the seventh closing out the first ranked victory since 2022.

GAME TWO

Illinois fell to Ohio State, 2-0, in the second clash of the twinbill.

Berkmeyer, Yazzy Avila and Eileen Donahue tallied a hit in the loss with Mosely leading the way, including a 2-for-3 day at the dish.
