RALEIGH, N.C. – Illinois softball saw its five-game winning streak snapped as the Fighting Illini fell to NC State, 4-0, to close out The Marucci Classic.
The Fighting Illini moved to 7-6 on the season while the Wolfpack improved to 10-5.
Megan Nuechterlein got the start in the circle, taking the loss to fall to 1-2 this year. Lauren Wiles came on in relief, tossing 2.0 innings while striking out a pair.
How It Happened
Illinois trailed early, with NC State jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. After a scoreless second by both squads, Illinois allowed a solo shot to centerfield, doubling the deficit.
Defensive struggles plagued the Illini as an error in the fourth extended the inning, resulting in the Pack taking the 4-0 edge.Â
Ava Moore broke up the NC State no-hitter in the top of the sixth, but the freshman only got as far as second base in the frame. Unable to find an offensive rhythm, the Orange and Blue went down in order to end the 4-0 loss
