CHAMPAIGN, Ill – Fighting Illini junior Kenta Miyoshi has earned Big Ten Men's Tennis Player of the Week recognition for the second time this season, the conference office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The Kawasaki, Japan, native recorded ranked wins at No. 1 singles in Illinois' home doubleheader sweep of Clemson and Notre Dame, and he served as the clinching match in the Orange and Blue's comeback win over the Tigers.
Miyoshi began the day with a come-from-behind, three-set victory against Clemson's No. 51-ranked Noa Vukadin. After dropping the opening set, Miyoshi bounced back by claiming the second frame before prevailing in the third-set tiebreaker to secure the individual win and the team triumph, his second clinch of the season.
He followed it up later that night with a straight-set win, 6-4, 7-5, against No. 33 Sebastian Dominko of Notre Dame. The victory marked his 12th ranked triumph of the season as he improved to 17-7 overall in singles play.
Currently ranked a career-high No. 13 in the ITA singles rankings, Miyoshi was named the Big Ten Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season after first earning that distinction on Sept. 18.
Miyoshi and the Illini will take on No. 20 Michigan at Atkins Tennis Center on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT. Admission is free.
