Illinois Finishes ITA All-American Championships With Six Singles Wins

TULSA, Okla. – The Fighting Illini closed their time at the ITA All-American Championships on Friday after Gabrielius Guzauskas, Kenta Miyoshi, and William Mroz combined for six total wins across pre-qualifying, qualifying, and main draw action.

Mroz totaled four of Illinois' six wins in his run from pre-qualifying to the final round of qualifying play. Mroz began his time in Tulsa with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Auburn's William Nolan on Saturday before defeating his first seeded opponent of the tournament, [17-32] Nate Bonetto of Georgia Tech, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

The Florida native advanced to the singles qualifying bracket via a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Duke's Oscar Brown on Sunday afternoon.

Guzauskas fell to Washington's Soham Purohit in his opening match but posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Duke's Teddy Truwit in a consolation contest on Sunday.

Mroz then picked up his first ranked win of the season on Monday in the form of a 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-1 decision over No. 51 Wissam Abderrahman of Clemson, who was also the No. 2 seed in the qualifying bracket. Mroz's run came to a close in the final round of qualifying action after he suffered a three-set defeat to Michigan State's Max Sheldon on Tuesday. 

Miyoshi earned a spot in the main draw, though he fell to [5] No. 5 Colton Smith of Arizona in three sets on Wednesday to move into the consolation bracket. He bounced back on Thursday with a come-from-behind three-set win over Kentucky's No. 83 Charlelie Cosnet; Miyoshi fell in the first frame, 6-4, before completing the comeback with a 6-1 second-set victory and a 6-3 triumph in the third and final set.

Miyoshi's run ultimately came to a close after playing his third ranked opponent in as many days, coming up short in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat to No. 28 Ryan Colby of Georgia on Friday.
