Harding's Grand Slam Powers Illini to Series Opening Win at Minnesota

Recap

MINNEAPOLIS -- Illinois baseball (15-12, 6-1) captured its sixth-straight win with an 11-2 victory over Minnesota (11-13, 1-3) on Friday at Siebert Field.

For the sixth-consecutive game, the Illini offense scored double-digit runs, backed by four-RBI performances from Brody Harding and Drake Westcott. Harding went 3-for-3 with two runs, a home run and two walks, while Westcott went 1-for-5 with a run. All nine starters collected a hit in the ballgame and six had multi-hit efforts.

Payton Hutchings picked up the win out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 shutout frames to go along with two strikeouts. The lefty also held the Golden Gophers to just two hits. Julius Sanchez, making his season debut, worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close the game, tallying one strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Illinois plated three runs its first time up to bat, with Westcott bringing home two on a single and Ryan Moerman also picking up an RBI on an infield-single. A RBI-double from Coltin Quagliano in the second made it 4-0, but the Gophers would get on the board in the bottom half of the frame on a solo home run.

The Illini broke the game open in the third on Harding's grand slam, the second-straight game the Orange and Blue have hit a round-tripper with the bases loaded. Westcott would make it 9-1 in the fifth on an RBI-groundout for his third RBI of the contest.

The Golden Gophers threatened to get back into ballgame in their half of fifth, loading the bases with just one out. Hutchings emerged from the bullpen and allowed just one run to come across, retiring both batters he faced. The Coal City, Ill., native, then tossed 3.0 shutout innings to maintain the Illini's big lead.

Illinois would then push two more runs across over the remainder of the game and would go on to cruise to the 11-2 win.
