CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois baseball (26-15) got back into the win column with an emphatic 21-11 run-rule victory, in seven innings, over No. 24 Indiana State (31-10) tonight at Illinois Field.
Ryan Moerman went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs, three home runs and nine RBI. Cal Hejza also had a multi-home run performance, going 2-for-5 with two runs, two home runs and three RBI. Connor Milton delivered the walk-off win with a solo blast to center to cap a 2-for-3, two run, double, home run, one RBI and two walk performance. The Illini slugged a total of seven home runs in the ballgame, their fifth game of the season with at least five round-trippers.
Jake Swartz picked up the victory out of the bullpen to improve to 2-2 on the season. The right-hander went 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out two. Korey Bunselmeyer turned in a scoreless seventh inning, retiring all three batters on groundouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Indiana State took a 1-0 lead after its first trip to the plate, but it was short lived as Hejza took the first pitch he saw over the fence in left to immediately tie the game. Illinois would take the lead for good when Camden Janik raced home on a passed ball to make it 2-1.
The Illini offense erupted for six runs in the second, scoring all of them with two outs. Hejza doubled his home run tally by crushing a two-run shot and Vytas Valincius chipped in with an RBI-single three batters later. Moerman then followed with a three-run dinger to make it 8-1.
The Sycamores hit back for three runs in the third to make it 8-4, but for the second-consecutive frame, Illinois plated six with two outs. Drake Westcott started the scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk and Valincius picked up his second RBI of the night by getting hit by a pitch. Moerman followed with a grand slam to center to make it 14-4.
Indiana State would not go away, picking up a six-run frame of its own to make it 14-10.Â
The Orange and Blue would make it an 18-10 game by scoring four times in fifth. Valincius scored on an error and Coltin Quagliano slugged a three-run opposite-field blast with two outs.
The visitors put a run on the board in the sixth but Illinois would get that run back and more in the bottom half of the inning when Moerman went deep for the third time in the ballgame, a two-run shot, making it 20-10.
After Bunselmeyer kept the Sycamores off the board in the sixth, Milton sent all 1,127 fans home happy with his walk-off homer to center, giving the Illini the 21-11 victory.
