Illinois Wrestling Stopped by No. 4 Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Illinois wrestling team lost their dual to No. 4 Nebraska, 28-9, on Sunday (Feb. 4) from the Devaney Center.

Graduate student No. 33 (133 lbs.) Tony Madrigal improved to 2-0 on the weekend with an upset win over No. 17 Jake Van Dee (NEB) today. The veteran Madrigal wrestled hard and to the bell every round. He escaped with three seconds left in the first period which led to him getting the winning takedown with roughly 30 seconds remaining in the third period. He turned Van Dee to his back to earn some back points and not get hit for his second stall call to win via decision 8-3.

Redshirt junior No. 9 (174 lbs.) Edmond Ruth improved to 2-0 on the weekend as well. He picked up a ranked win against No. 33 Bubba Wilson (NEB) via decision 4-0. Ruth leads the Illini in wins this season with 14 and has scored a team-high 28 dual points.

Redshirt sophomore 149 pounder Jake Harrier captured his first Big Ten dual win of the season. He battled against Blake Cushing (NEB) for seven straight minutes with each wrestler only scoring an escape in regulation. In overtime Harrier was quick and decisive with his movements and got both legs of Cushing to win, 4-1.
