Illini Grapplers Stumble Against Michigan State

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois wrestling squad lost their dual to the Michigan State, 29-10, in the State Farm Center on Friday (Feb. 2).

Redshirt sophomore No. 27 (141 lbs.) Danny Pucino got the Illini out in front early in an exciting match against No. 30 Jordan Hamdan (MSU). He controlled all seven minutes using precisely timed shots to secure takedowns and snag the win 8-2. This would be the only lead of the night for the Illini.

Redshirt junior No. 9 (174 lbs.) Edmond Ruth returned to the win column with an overtime win against former Illini DJ Shannon (MSU). Ruth trailed in the third period but used a takedown midway through to knot the match up at six. In the overtime period Ruth didn't panic in the scramble for each other's legs. He gained control and won the match via decision, 9-6.

Graduate student No. 30 (133 lbs.) Tony Madrigal closed the dual out with a bonus point for the Orange and Blue. He got the major decision win over Jaden Crumpler (MSU) by a score of 13-2.
