Illini Head to Ole Miss for Exhibition Game
Illinois has its final tune-up prior to the regular season on Sunday, traveling to Oxford to face No. 24 Ole Miss in a charity exhibition game (11 a.m. CT, SEC Network). Net proceeds from the game will benefit CASA of North Mississippi.Â
Illinois began the preseason with a closed scrimmage against Butler on Oct. 13 in Champaign.
Illinois sits just outside the Top 25 of the preseason AP poll, receiving the most points (92) among unranked teams. The Illini check in at No. 24, meanwhile, in the preseason coaches poll.Â
Illinois is coming off another strong campaign under head coach Brad Underwood, compiling a 29-9 record to mark the third-winningest season in program history. Illinois won the 2024 Big Ten Tournament championship and advanced to NCAA East Regional Final, marking the UI's first Elite Eight appearance since 2005. The Illini ended the year ranked No. 6 in the AP poll, its second top-10 finish in the last four years of the Underwood era.
Illinois has a dramatically different roster for the 2024-25 season, returning just one starter in junior Ty Rodgers, a second scholarship player in sophomore Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn, and a pair of walk-ons. Overall, Illinois returns a total of just 14.2% of its minutes, 9.6% of its points, and 16.2% of its rebounds from last season.Â
But the coaching staff acquired talent from all areas to reload the roster. Illinois brought in five Division I transfers – three of whom come from high-major conferences – and signed five freshmen – which includes three international recruits – for a total of 10 new players on its 14-man roster.Â
After featuring six seniors in its rotation last season, Illinois has just one senior on this year's roster in graduate student Ben Humrichous.
Illinois is the winningest team in the Big Ten over the last five seasons, registering a 69-31 mark in league play while adding two conference tournament titles for a total of 75 victories over B1G teams during this span.
