Hello Illini Nation!
This is freshman Elizabeth Beek and I am excited to write the first Chip Shots blog of the season and share about my personal experience moving in and my first week at the U of I!
I chose to arrive a little early on campus for several reasons, which enabled a smooth, rush-free transition. Immediately upon my arrival I loved it! The campus is beautiful! I was able to move in before the crowds and explore the campus and find all my classes and facilities ahead of time. I explored Champaign-Urbana with all the wonderful restaurants and stores that are so close by. I also loved decorating my room with all the U of I fan gear.
I participated in several activities during Welcome Week. Sights and Sounds was absolutely amazing! This is where the university introduces the latest class of freshmen to the Illinois traditions under the lights at Memorial Stadium. Each athletic team's new members were introduced to come out on the field and our names were on the big screen – everyone was cheering, and I will never forget it!
I also had a variety of athletic and academic meetings during Welcome Week. It is clear the U of I staff take great pride in their student-athletes. Coach Slone, Coach Pina and Coach Julie have made my transition wonderful. I met my athletic-academic advisor who has been extremely helpful.
On Monday, August 21st, the team held the eighth annual Illinois Women's Golf Classic to raise money to benefit the program. This year we had the largest field with 27 teams.
The Classic kicked off with Illini Hour the night before with dinner and a silent auction. It was so much fun to meet so many alumnae and supporters of the program. One highlight of the Classic was meeting and getting a picture with Coach Slone's coach, Paula Smith. For the event, I covered holes 14 and 15 and hit shots for the teams that passed through. I loved this format because I was able to meet everyone that participated and supports our program.
The first week was a whirlwind but very exciting! It was great to finally start strength and conditioning, classes, training, and team meetings. The upper-class women on the team have also been extremely supportive. I have enjoyed not only playing with the team this week but also going to dinner with them also.
I am so excited for the season to start, and I am proud to be a member of the Fighting Illini!
Go ILLINI!
