CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Fighting Illini baseball (15-17, 4-8) was swept by Indiana (25-11, 9-3) in Saturday's doubleheader at Illinois Field.
Game 1: Indiana 6, Illinois 4
Indiana took the twin-bill opener with a 6-4 victory over Illinois.
The Hoosiers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first but the Illini responded in the bottom of the second, when Jacob Schroeder hit a towering two-run shot down the left-field line to tie up the ballgame.
Indiana took the lead back in the top of the third, but Illinois scored twice in the home half of the inning on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
The visitors would push a run across in the fourth, which proved to be decisive, and scored again in the sixth for some insurance, making it a 6-4 game.
The Illini created traffic on the basepaths all game, but the offense left 10 runners stranded in the contest.
John Lundgren turned in 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, striking out the final four batters he faced, including whiffing the side in the ninth.
Game 2: Indiana 16, Illinois 3
Illinois fell in the 'nightcap' of the doubleheader, 16-3, to Indiana.
The Hoosiers never looked back after scoring five runs in the third. The Illini pushed across a run in the home half, but Indiana responded with a run in the fourth, seven in the fifth and one in the sixth to open a 14-1 advantage.
Illinois scratched a run across in the bottom of the sixth and added one more in the seventh, when Drake Westcott crushed a solo blast to center.
Indiana went on to score two more in the ninth and would eventually go on to earn the doubleheader sweep.
Julius Sanchez tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
The Fighting Illini will be back in action on Tuesday, where they will welcome Eastern Illinois to Illinois Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT.
