GENEVA, Ohio – The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams completed day one action of the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 24 from the SPIRE Institute. The women's distance medley relay team (DMR) of sophomore Sam Poglitsch, freshman Madison Hardamon, seniors Tracy Towns and Olivia Howell clocked a time of 11:13.87. They placed third overall today and third in the Illinois record books as well.
Howell qualified herself for tomorrow's mile finals, she placed second overall with a time of 4:42.71. Redshirt senior Kashief King sprinted a new personal-best 400m en route to his qualification for tomorrow's finals (47.09). Graduate student Bret Dannis rounded out qualifiers from today's action with a 7.83 in the 60m hurdles.
The men's DMR team of senior Will O'Brien, sophomores DeVontae Ford, Will Merrick and freshman Brady Masters placed fourth on a time of 9:40.13.
Sophomore Tori Thomas vaulted her way to sixth in the pole vault, 4.09m (13-5). Sophomore Daniel Mboyo leaped into eighth place in the long jump, 7.30m (23-11 1/2). Sophomore Lydia Malecek registered a new personal-best in the 800m (2:10.50). Senior Jason Thormo recorded a new personal-best in the 200m (21.51) as well as senior Robert Williams in the 400m (47.87).
MULTI-EVENTS
Two Illinois women finished the pentathlon today with new personal-best point totals: senior Danni Stoughton (ninth – 3,706) and junior Kenli Nettles (11th – 3,666). Stoughton also recorded new personal-best marks in the 60m hurdles (9.14), high jump 1.61m (5-3 1/4), and 800m (2:17.53). Nettles registered a third-place finish in the high jump with a 1.70m (5-7) leap and a new best throw in the shot put, 11.29m (37-0 1/2).
Two Illini men are competing in the heptathlon, senior Aiden Ouimet and freshman Isaac Rice. Ouimet finished day one in fourth place with 2,993 points. He recorded a new personal-best in the 60m dash (7.12). Rice slotted himself in at sixth with 2,866 points. He set new best marks in the high jump [1.94m (6-4 1/4)] and long jump [6.84m (22-5 1/4)].

The Illinois track and field teams are back tomorrow for the final day of the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Sat. Feb. 25. The heptathlon will resume at 10, field events begin at 10:30 a.m. and running events hit the blocks at 12:20 p.m. CT.
