ATLANTA, Ga. -- Illinois softball dropped a 5-2 contest to Georgia Tech during the ACC/B1G Challenge at Mewborn Field on Saturday night.
Lauren Wiles took the loss, moving to 0-3 for her sophomore campaign as she tossed 2.2 innings and allowed five runs on five hits. Addy Jarvis was a bright spot for the Fighting Illini (4-4), coming out of the bullpen and throwing 3.1 scoreless innings, surrendering just three hits on the day.
Offensively, the Illini were led by Avrey Steiner, who went 2-for-3 at the plate. Delaney Rummell and Kailee Powell added an RBI single each for the Orange and Blue.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The bats came alive for the Yellow Jackets (4-4) early as a two-RBI double plated the first runs of the day. An error by the Illini added a third run in the first, putting Illinois behind, 3-0, after just one inning of play. After a scoreless second for both squads, a double down the left field line extended Georgia Tech's lead, 5-0, in the third frame.
The Fighting Illini fired back in the fourth with a fielding error placing a runner on first and no outs. A single up the middle by Rummell plated the first run of the game for the Illini. Powell added a two-out single for the Orange and Blue, scoring the team's second run of the inning.
Jarvis held the Yellow Jackets scoreless in relief, but the Illini came up short, falling 5-2.
Illinois takes on Georgia Tech in a rematch on Sunday during the ACC/B1G finale at Mewborn Field. First pitch is slated for 11:30 a.m. CT.
