CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Fighting Illini swim and dive programs are on the road to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Big Ten Championships on Wed.-Sat. Feb. 15-18. First year head coach Jeana Kempe compiled a 6-3 (1-3 B1G) record, the best since the 2018-19 season where they went 7-5 (1-3 B1G).
A pair of school records were broken in the regular season. First the 200 freestyle relay team of senior Isabelle Guerra, senior Athena Salafatinos, junior Lily Olson and sophomore Logan Kuehne set the new record time of 1:31.02 at the Iowa Invitational on Dec. 1, 2022. Next freshman Liv Dorshorst set the record in the 1000 freestyle with a 9:56.73 at Nebraska on Jan. 21, 2023.
29 other new or improved program top-10 marks were registered as well throughout the season. Their largest margin of victory, 223-76, came against the University of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday Oct. 29, 2022. The most impressive win was a comeback against FIU on Fri.-Sat Nov. 4-5, 2022. The Illini trailed 106.5-117.5 after day one, but outscored FIU 123-101 on day 2 to win 229.5-218.5.
