CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The College Gymnastics Association announced the 2022 national team champions and All-Americans on Monday, with Illinois in fifth with a 3.2 team grade-point average, five first-team All-Americans and four on second team.
Stanford led the way with a team GPA of 3.533, followed by William and Mary (3.453), Michigan (3.362) and Springfield (3.416). Following Illinois was California-Berkeley (3.217), Ohio State (3.318) Nebraska (3.170), Navy (3.168) and Army West Point (3.112) rounded out the Top 10. Oklahoma, Air Force and Penn State earned honorable mention honors.
Since the inception of the award in 1991, the Orange and Blue have received 100 first-team All-American Scholar-Athlete honors and 54 second-team honors.
Clay Mason Stephens becomes the seventh Illini gymnast to earn first-team honors for all four years of eligibility. He joins former gymnasts Joey Peters (2012-17), Jon Corbitt (1995-98), Benjamin Newman (2002-05), Anthony Russo (2003-06), Jon Drollinger (2005-08) and Alex Varga (2011-14) as the only Illini gymnasts to garner such award.
"I am very proud of these guys for finishing in the top 5 of the NCAA with their team GPA," interim head coach Daniel Ribeiro said. "The student comes before the athlete in a student athlete and we take pride in being one the highest academic achievers in the NCAA."
