FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. – Illinois men's track and field graduate student Jon Davis qualified for the NCAA Championships in the men's 1500m on Friday (May 27) night at the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor West Prelims at John McDonnell Field.
"Jon navigated both races this weekend with poise and confidence," said assistant coach Sarah Haveman. We are excited to get him to Eugene and have him represent Illinois and our program well."
Davis placed first in his heat for an automatic qualification and finished ninth overall with a time of 3:42. 69.
The Oakwood, Ill., native will be making his second appearance at the NCAA Championships after previously qualifying as a freshman in 2017. Davis finished in 16th place in the 5K to earn Second Team All-America honors with a time of 14:45.28.
The 2022 edition of the NCAA Championships will be held at Hayward Field on June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon.
One other Illini was in action on the night as senior Bret Dannis, who despite not qualifying for nationals, turned in a personal-best time of 13.79 in the men's 110 hurdles to finish sixth in his heat and 17th overall.
The 2022 edition of the NCAA West Prelims concludes competition on Saturday with six Illini looking to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships with graduate student Kristin Higgins kicking things off with the women's high jump at 2:30 p.m. CT, followed by junior Olivia Howell in the women's 1500m at 5:15 p.m., and junior Jessica McDowell in the women's 400m at 6:50 p.m. The competition wraps up with graduate student Rebecca Craddock in the women's 5000m at 8:10 p.m., and the women's 4x400 relay team of freshman Logan Neely, McDowell, Howell and junior Danni Stoughton at 8:45 p.m. Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Rounds sites will qualify for the NCAA Championships.
