Illini Fall in Cambria College Classic Opener to No. 12 Notre Dame

MINNEAPOLIS — The Illinois baseball team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 12 Notre Dame in the Illini's first game of the Cambria College Classic at U.S. Bank Stadium. Ryan Moerman led Illinois with two hits and an RBI.

Illinois (2-5) fell behind 4-0 after Notre Dame (6-1) plated two runs in back-to-back innings in the third and fourth. That was enough scoring for Notre Dame ace Aidan Tyrell (3-0) to pick up the win, as he allowed one run on six hits in five innings.

Moerman got the Illini on the board in the fourth with a double off the center field wall to drive in Jacob Campbell. Campbell had singled to left to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

Illinois' Cole Kirschsieper (1-1) took his first loss of the year after allowing four runs on six hits in five innings.

Illinois is back on the diamond Saturday against West Virginia at 3 p.m. CT on BTN+, then again Sunday against Kansas at 2 p.m. CT.

• Illinois outhit Notre Dame, 10-8.
• Last year's Big Ten batting champion Justin Janas started for the first time this season and singled in his first at-bat.
• Jacob Campbell extended his hitting streak to nine games dating back to 5/29/2021.
• Branden Comia, Ryan Moerman, Cam McDonald, and Brody Harding had a two-hit games.
• Illinois fell to 6-2 all-time at U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings.
• Ryan Moerman tied for the team lead with his fourth RBI of the season.
