CONWAY, S.C. – The Illinois Fighting Illini improved to 2-2 on the season with a 7-4 win over Middle Tennessee State on Friday at Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina. The Illini offense tallied five unanswered runs in two innings after giving up the first two runs of the game to the Blue Raiders. Illinois (2-2) also notched 12 hits on the afternoon, their second straight game putting up double-digits in the hit column.
Junior CÂ Jacob Campbell and Sophomore OF Danny Doligale each went 3-for-5 and two RBI to lead the Illini at the plate. Campbell tied his career-high with two doubles, while Doligale matched his three career high hits. LHP Cole Kirschsieper took the mound in his second start of the season for Illinois, throwing six complete innings and striking out five while allowing two runs. Kirschsieper also earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-0.
Making his second career start, freshman OF Ryan Moerman took advantage of a bases loaded opportunity for the Illini in the fourth inning with two-RBI single up the middle to knot the score at two. In the next at bat, Danny Doligale doubled to left field to give Illinois a 4-2 lead heading into the fifth frame. The Illini would tack on three more runs in the final five frames and take a 7-4 lead into the ninth inning, allowing junior RHP Ty Rybarczyk to register his first save of the season.
Illinois is back at Springs Brooks Stadium Saturday at 2 p.m. CT to take on Coastal Carolina before heading North to Wilmington, N.C. for the final game of the weekend against UNC-Wilmington on Sunday.
